Also called the Southern Outer Banks, the 85 miles of scenic shoreline on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast feel like a giant hidden gem. Sure, you’ve heard of Nags Head (thanks, Netflix) but the 11 Crystal Coast communities about three to four hours southwest of that should be on your radar too. It’s easy to drive from one to the next, so your crew could be UTVing around Cape Lookout National Seashore in the morning, exploring the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores in the afternoon and heading to the buzzy Amos Mosquito’s in Atlantic Beach for dinner. With happy yet tired kids, retreat to your beach rental (there are many!) or hotel before you get up and do it all again tomorrow.

TESTER NOTES: “Each town we explored had its own character, and Beaufort was my favorite,” said our reviewer. The city, established in 1713, includes a fantastic downtown for shopping and dining, a maritime museum and a picturesque creek where you can kayak. Our tester stayed at the Beaufort Hotel, calling it “an impressive waterfront boutique hotel with large bedrooms that struck the right balance between comfort and style.”

The first Spanish colonial city on the Baja peninsula in northwestern Mexico, Loreto dazzles families with its unspoiled beaches, stunning landscapes and downtown cobblestone streets. Fortunately, a lot of vacationers haven’t caught wind of Loreto’s charms yet, so it doesn’t feel touristy and still offers many family-owned shops, restaurants and hotels. Given all the opportunities for adventure — including snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding and scuba diving in National Loreto Bay and Marine Park — it's best experienced with older kids. The airport, about 15 minutes from the town center, offers direct flights, including some from the East Coast.

TESTER NOTES: “We stayed at Hotel La Misión—the largest in town and probably the most modern of all the hotels,” said our reviewer. “Our room had a beautiful water view with a balcony, a perfect spot for watching the Loreto sunrises.” She added that while restaurants mainly concentrate on Mexican fare, you can also find Tex-Mex, Italian and Peruvian. “We had great meals there,” she added.

From Jupiter Beach to Boca Raton, the 47 miles of sun-kissed shores in what are collectively known as The Palm Beaches have the reputation for being a playground for retirees and jet-setters. But the vibe is changing fast. More resorts are prioritizing families, and in some cases the average age of guests has decreased by decades. Beyond the impeccable beaches, family-focused attractions are sprinkled throughout the region — standouts include the sea turtle–focused Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach and the drive-through Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee.

TESTER NOTES: “This trip completely changed my perspective on the Palm Beaches,” said our reviewer, who visited with her spouse and their 2-year-old. “It’s a treat for parents, but also enjoyable for kids.” Her family split their stay between the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens and Eau Palm Beach Resort in Manalapan. “They were both exquisite, but very different,” she said. “PGA is best for families who like to golf, but it is also family-friendly, with an amazing kids’ club and spa. Eau Palm Beach is pure luxury on the water and kid-friendly too.”

It's always whale-watching season in Dana Point, CA. About 35 miles south of Disneyland, this laid-back beach town boasts the highest concentration of whales and dolphins of any place in the world. Migrating gray whales swing by Dana Point from November through April, while blue whales come to visit from May through November. See them up close (and learn why Dana Point is a mecca for marine life) on one of the many whale-watching tours and at the educational Ocean Institute. The beaches are awesome too — Baby Beach in particular has gentle waves and nearby restrooms.

TESTER NOTES: Fly into Orange County rather than L.A. if possible, suggests our tester. “Dana Point was just an easy 30-minute drive from the airport, while L.A. traffic would have been a nightmare,” she noted. The beautiful Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, where our reviewer stayed, is near a trolley stop and just a 15-minute walk to the harbor. “I loved that the hotel is almost embedded within Lantern Bay Park, which has a playground and morning yoga,” she said. “It made the resort feel like it was part of the community.”

Capitalize on the calm, crystal-clear Gulf Coast waters off Destin-Fort Walton Beach to take little ones snorkeling, charter fishing or even surfing for the first time. The destination’s new Little Adventures program simplifies finding a family-friendly outfitter. Search options on its website, sorting by your child’s age, price point and how much time you have for the activity; you'll get, say, four tailored suggestions instead of 40 general ones. From the site, you can also chat online with a mom who can dispense advice about the best beaches (24 miles of them!), restaurants and places to stay from resorts to vacation rentals. The easy-to-navigate Destin-Fort Walton airport offers direct flights from more than two dozen cities including Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas so you'll have less time in the air and more on the sand.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer raved about the activities through the Little Adventures program. “My third grader caught a 31-inch-long fish on our fishing trip with Lions Tale Adventures,” she said. “The captain wouldn’t let him give up — and my son was so excited and proud.“

Thank you for getting it, JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa. Just opened in May, the chic resort has sculpted a kids’ play area on its stretch of white-sand beach that’s exclusive to resort guests. Mini vacationers can go to town with the loaner sand toys (and even games like Jenga) while you comfortably watch from your nearby lounger. One- to three-bedroom “residences” give you separate sleeping quarters from the kids’ as well as a mini fridge, a microwave and a pantry to boot. A swimming pool is on the rooftop (whoa!), and you can drop off 5- to 12-year-olds at Hideaway Hangout for an array of activities including a beach-themed craft and yoga sesh.

TESTER NOTES: Service is spot-on throughout the resort — not surprising, since staff underwent several extra months of training after the building was ready. “This is by far the nicest, most helpful, friendliest staff we have ever had the pleasure of meeting,” said our reviewer.

You know what’s harder than traveling with a toddler? Traveling with a toddler who has special needs. Beaches Negril, an all-inclusive, family-focused resort on the famed Seven Mile Beach, has got you. Its kids’ club staff receives 40 additional hours of training, so there’s never a question about whether a child with autism or sensory differences can join the fun. Sensory-friendly toys and comfort aids are also available at the camp, and new brochures highlight the sensory levels of the resort’s Sesame Street programming, like the parade, puppet-making and tea parties that families can participate in together. Just-opened multi-bedroom villas, some with butler service, are icing on an already very delicious cake.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewers said everything went smoothly and noted, “We truly felt taken care of.” A parent noted, “The kids’ club staff were very patient and attentive to my 7-year-old daughter, who has autism. She enjoyed the activities, like a multilevel climbing structure, that were inside the club building as well as ones on the grounds. The staff also had a visual schedule of activities that my daughter appreciated.”

Even if your kids are seasoned vacationers, they’re going to have a lot of “firsts” at the all-inclusive Club Med Cancún. And if the kids want to go, go, go but you’d rather take things slowly, the supervised clubs for babies through teens, broken down by age into several groups, provide an enthralling experience for them while you’re at the adult pool.

TESTER NOTES: “All-inclusives have never appealed to my husband and me because we value the culinary experience, but the food here was super fresh and plentiful and the drinks were fantastic,” said our reviewer. "Plus, our 8-year-old and 12-year-old could always find something they wanted to eat — and that's a miracle!"

Jumpin’ jellyfish! SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, and Dora the Explorer devotees will be in their element at the all-inclusive Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya. Your kids will talk about the themed rooms, water park and food, character meet-and-greets and, yes, the brand’s famous green slime, long after the suitcases have been unpacked. But as kid-focused as this resort is, parents aren’t an afterthought. A spa, a mimosa bar, a poke bowl station and suites with swim-up pools make you feel right at home too.

TESTER NOTES: “It exceeded our expectations on so many levels,” said a reviewer who visited with her 9- and 13-year-olds. “From the swim-up pool and lounge area just steps outside our room to the SpongeBob SquarePants refrigerator to the neon-colored slime dripping from the lampshade, the room was simply outstanding!” In fact, she noted that the decor of the restaurants “had subtle and tasteful nods to Nickelodeon, but wasn’t overdone or too kitschy.”

For a passport-free tropical getaway, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Rainforest, Golf & Beach Resort delivers an unforgettable adventure. Sure, you'll spend countless hours on the two miles of private beach — with golden sand, turquoise water and typically gentle waves along with umbrellas and loungers, how could you not? But the resort’s huge array of family-friendly activities, such as kite flying, salsa dancing, and even a chance to feed iguanas, is enticing. At the supervised feeding, families can give iguanas and turtles fresh fruit on skewers. To see more iguanas (and many other animals), book an excursion to the El Yunque National Rainforest — it’s just 10 minutes from the resort.

TESTER NOTES: “This was a fun, vibrant resort that had a great tropical feel!” said our tester. While she and her son enjoyed all the food they tried, they thought the Puerto-Rican barbecue buffet on weekends was particularly good. “If your family has leftovers from any meal, you can keep them in your fridge and reheat them in the microwave at the Roots To Go restaurant,” she said.

The Hotel Xcaret México doesn’t want you to be the all-inclusive vacationer who never leaves the property because you’re worried about getting your money’s worth. The brand operates a dozen “adventure parks” around the region that are included in the price, and they’ll even shuttle your crew to them. Not only do you get to see more of the locale that way but you can also have memorable experiences, like exploring cenotes (underground caves filled with water) and ziplining over treetops, that you couldn’t possibly have at a single resort. While the adventure parks do appeal more to families with older kids, the resort itself offers a drop-off kids’ club for ages 4 and up and thoughtful touches like kids’ loungers alongside the adult ones.

TESTER NOTES: Besides the activities, the service and the food were top-notch. If you hope to eat at Ha Restaurant, which specializes in contemporary Mexican fare, you need to make a reservation a few months in advance. “It was one of the nicest, most imaginatively delicious meals we have ever had,” our reviewer said.

European families thought they were going to keep Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort & Hotel all to themselves, but the secret is out. On a continent where it’s hard to find a hotel room that sleeps more than two guests, there’s an entire beach resort in the trendy Algarve region catering to families with kids ages 13 and under. Its 155 villas each supply multiple bedrooms, a kitchen and — maybe most useful of all — a washer and dryer. For your next lakefront getaway or even family reunion, you don't have to choose between a vacation rental and a resort. Open from May to October, The Cove at Sylvan Beach consists of 70 adorable two- and three-bedroom cottages with kitchens, outdoor grills, living rooms and washer/dryers. There are also resort-like perks including a heated pool that’s lifeguarded, a playground, organized activities, and a grab-and-go marketplace offering sundries, ice cream and of course coffee. Each family receives its own pontoon boat to use on Oneida Lake, and you can rent gear such as water skis, kayaks and paddleboards on-site. As for the beach, it’s a short walk away. Pick up smoothie bowls (there's a great shop on the way) and eat breakfast admiring the view.

TESTER NOTES: The property opened last year, and “everything still felt brand new,” said our reviewer, who noted that the three-bedroom cottages had bunks for kids. She added, “The setup of the property and the feel of the cottage give homey vibes with a vacation edge."

You can practically feel the adrenaline pumping in the water park at Atlantis Paradise Island. Slides with vertical drops of up to 60 feet feel exhilarating, to put it mildly. Across the resort, on the five miles of white sand beach, calm turquoise water and powdery white sand relax vacationers. The juxtaposition helps explain why this mega-resort is so popular, especially with families of older kids and multigenerational groups—you set your own pace. A pirate-themed water park for young kids unleashes mini thrills, while the open-air marine habitat with more than 65,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species entertains all ages in a subtler way. While not high-intensity, restaurant concepts from three Michelin-star-rated chefs do have a way of exciting grown-ups. Of the five hotels on the property, the Royal Towers offers the most recently updated rooms, and it is in a central location.

TESTER NOTES: Crush, a club with separate nighttime hours for tweens and teens, is the ultimate hangout spot, thanks to a DJ and a floor-to-ceiling gaming tree. “My 12-year-old twins loved it,” said our reviewer. “While they were having fun, my husband and I went to the casino and bars.”

Just five minutes from the airport (hooray!), the all-inclusive Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa immediately revitalizes jet-lagged families. Kids will want to change into their swimsuits and play in the water park, the largest on the island. It’s not a bad idea, considering the fact that you can all float down the lazy river and enjoy some bites and drinks on loungers by the park. It’s also 100% worth taking advantage of the kids’ club. In groups broken down into three age ranges — 3 and under, 4 to 7, and 8 to 12 — the club offers fun activities including a pirate ship play space and a mini rock wall. The former coconut plantation spread over 85 acres, with beautiful flowers and more than 1,000 palm trees, also contains a sanctuary for rescued animals that families can visit.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer was impressed with the food selection and quality. A casual pick right on the water, The Jerk Treehouse, “had fabulous food,” she said, adding, “Silk was our favorite fine-dining restaurant. I had the best wonton soup of my life there.”

The historic Hotel del Coronado recently opened a contemporary spinoff that's ideal for families who need multiple bedrooms and extra hangout space. A maven for multi-gen groups, villas in The Shore House at the Del can sleep up to 11, have wrap-around balconies with ocean views and a kitchen with high-end appliances, including a Nespresso machine. The location can't be beat, either. Walk from your room for just a few minutes, and your crew could be on one of the best beaches in San Diego, in the heated outdoor pool and hot tub that's exclusive for Shore House guests, or at one of the downtown's trendy shops or restaurants.

TESTER NOTES: "Since all the Hotel del Coronado's amenities, including its thoughtful Ocean Explorers Kids' Program, are also available to families staying at Shore House, we felt like we had the best of both worlds," said our tester, who visited with three generations.

Located on the Mayan coastline, Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort is a weary parents' paradise. You're greeted with welcome drinks, an offer to store any bulky kid gear you needed for the plane ride and a lineup of activities included in the price. The best one may be the Kids' Club for ages 4 to 12. With no up-charge, you can take the chance that your kids will be so enamored with all the activities and friendly staff that you can sit with a book by the adults-only pool or indulge in a spa treatment from its neighboring sister property, Waldorf Astoria Cancun. And did we mention the taqueria with tamarind margaritas?

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who brought her spouse and 5-year-old, is already planning another vacation there. "Our son loved it so much that he cried when we left," she said, noting that her family felt "very safe on the property."

If lawn games and lobster rolls are what your family's vacation dreams are made of, look no further than Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. The beloved Cape Cod mainstay since 1925 embraces quintessential fun. The vibe is chill—summer afternoons are spent on the resort's small private beach or the Cape Cod National Seashore (guests can take a boat shuttle there from the resort's dock). Aloha to swaying palm trees, stunning beaches with otherworldly landscapes and shave ice: Four Seasons Resort Hualālai on the island of Hawaiʻi (aka "The Big Island") fulfills what's on your family's vacation wishlist and then some. The Four Seasons vibrant cultural center—staffed by "aunties" who have a way with kids—immerses families in Native Hawaiian traditions. Sure, there's hula and lei-making, but storytelling, ukulele lessons, quilting, and more round out the robust (and complementary) daily lineup. That’s in addition to the free Kids for All Seasons club for 5- to 12-year-olds and the marine activity center focusing on sustainability and educational programming.

TESTER NOTES: “The warmth and genuine kindness we felt at the cultural center was unlike anything we’d ever experienced,” said our reviewer, who visited with her 13-year-old. She was also impressed by the stylish rooms that “exuded Hawaiian vibes with a modern and chic twist.”

If you loathe the idea of switching hotels as you experience So Cal’s epic attractions (Legoland! Disneyland! The San Diego Zoo!), flock to The Seabird Resort. About halfway between Anaheim and San Diego and just a few miles from Legoland California, this newish beachfront property gives you a lot of bang for your buck and a stylish central location to boot. Recharge after visiting the theme parks with relaxing beach and pool time. While your mini vacationers are at the kids’ club, consider booking yourself a foot treatment at Sunny's Spa & Beauty Lounge; your soul — er, soles — will thank you.

TESTER NOTES: Check the daily resort schedule. “While we were there, curated activities for kids were taking place in the ‘library’ and a family-friendly movie was shown on the rooftop,” said our reviewer, who also praised the well-designed room with multiple charging stations.

If you’re planning to take the kids to Universal Studios Hollywood, The Garland comes out on top for being a playful and practical place to stay. A swanky trolley will whisk you to the park and back to the hotel, where you’ll really be glad you booked a family suite with a separate walled-off kids’ nook with bunk beds. If you still have the energy (though it won’t take much), go to the pool for the “dive-in” classic movies or to the outdoor bar for artisanal cocktails. While splashes of orange throughout the resort add to its retro feel, the property is actually becoming more green thanks to drought-resistant landscaping and a solar-power system that’s in the works.

TESTER NOTES: “We ate breakfast at The Front Yard every day before hopping on the trolley,” said our reviewer, who visited with her spouse and 7-year-old. “It was so cute seeing all the little Marios and Princess Peaches at the tables. The food was delicious, and my daughter got a coloring sheet.”

While the 400-thread count sheets, loaner Bugaboo strollers and Peloton bikes in the fitness center impress, the location of Thompson Central Park New York is most remarkable. Opt for keyless mobile check-in to one of the hotel’s recently renovated 587 rooms and suites (king suites are great for families) to bypass the front desk and get a head start on sightseeing. In just five minutes you can walk to the south entrance of Central Park or be at a subway stop that will whisk your crew uptown or downtown. In the unlikely event that you come back to the hotel hungry, restaurants — including Parker’s, which has jazz music, and the more family-friendly Burger Joint — have you covered.

TESTER NOTES: “The hotel was in the perfect location for us,” said our reviewer, who visited with her family. "We walked to the Central Park Zoo and spent a lot of time in the Columbus Circle area, including at Camp at Time Warner Center and Magnolia Bakery. There was even a grocery store next to the hotel’s back entrance, which proved very convenient for us.”

Fur babies have it made at Staypineapple, a hotel chain with locations in seven major U.S. cities. No matter which location you visit, the perks for your pooch are the same — they get a dog bed to use during the stay, a tin of treats and a collapsible water bowl to take home. While most hotels don’t allow you to keep a pet inside the room while you’re out (even if you’re just making a quick run to Starbucks), Staypineapple gives pet parents a doggie door hanger that says “My Owner Is Out Exploring’ to indicate that it’s not a good time for a visit from housekeeping. Genius, right? Human treats are offered too, with a free spread of pineapple-shaped cookies, local coffee and infused water every afternoon.

TESTER NOTES: Reviewers tried the locations in New York City, San Diego and Seattle. “We enjoyed the staff’s enthusiasm for dogs and the sheer number of dogs we saw around the hotel and on our floor specifically,” said our reviewer who brought her pooch to Staypineapple Hotel Z in San Diego. “We also loved the location of the hotel.”

Perched on 15 acres of parkland above the iconic city, the The Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel allows families to intersperse sightseeing with resort fun. Take the short hotel shuttle ride into Rome to explore the Coliseum and other historic sites and museums. Then, in the heat of the afternoon, retreat to the hotel’s four swimming pools, including one just for young kids and another under a glass dome. A complimentary kids’ club for 4- to 12-year-olds operates in the summer months so you can take advantage of the on-site spa or meander around the property to see some of more than 1,000 pieces of art. Connecting rooms for families can accommodate two adults and three children, and you’ll have plenty of options for breakfast and other meals.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who visited with his spouse and two young children, thought it would be a wonderful place to stay on a family’s first trip to Europe. “The view is unbelievable, and the pools are amazing,” he said. “We also found the customer service to be exceptional.”

The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa recently received an $80 million glow-up, and it’s impressive. Kids will care most about the AquaRidge WaterPark, which has an array of new slides, a splash pad, a food truck area and a reimagined lazy river. Private firepits now sit outside some first-level rooms. while many rooms on upper floors got balcony redos to let guests better soak in the spectacular views of desert vistas and waterways. An on-property garden supplies produce for the restaurants, including Tía Carmen, a concept from a popular Top Chef contestant. Another fresh feature: 17 lighted pickleball courts and certified instructors to teach you how to play or help you up your game. Bike or hike the nearby trails in the morning — a promise of afternoon pool time may get kids on board with the plan.

TESTER NOTES: “It had a buzzy and active vibe, and there were families of all sizes and people of all generations,“ said our reviewer. “Plus, the food was fabulous, with vegan, gluten-free and kids’ options indicated on the menus.”

No destination fulfills kids’ ultimate fantasies better than Orlando. In the self-proclaimed Theme Park Capital of the World, a mini vacationer can transform into a wand-wielding Hogwarts student, a Star Wars pilot or a shimmery princess. New experiences like Universal Studios Orlando’s DreamWorks Land are on the horizon, and the hotel count is closing in on 500. Most exciting for adults, a new high-speed Brightline train launched in the fall connecting Orlando with Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, so it's all aboard for some beach R&R after an epic Orlando stay.

TESTER NOTES: Since our reviewer had been to Orlando’s theme parks multiple times, she focused her family’s trip on the city’s other attractions. “There are so many amazing dining options and activities beyond the parks,” she said. In particular, her kids, 8 and 10, had a blast at the Museum of Illusions in ICON Park, adding that her family “also loved the one-price brunch at Cafe Tu Tu Tango, which included an unlimited array of delicious tapas-style dishes plus a separate kids’ menu.”

Deluxe hotels owned by Marriott, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin (including the newish Swan Reserve) offer most of the same amenities as the neighboring Disney properties at a fraction of the price. You can use Disney-run transportation, taking a water taxi to Hollywood Studios and, if you don’t feel like walking, to EPCOT as well. As is true for guests at the neighboring Disney hotels, buses will bring you to Animal Kingdom and the Magic Kingdom. You’ll have the same extended theme park hours as Disney hotel guests, and you’ll also be able to book restaurants and Lightning Lane ride entrances at the same time. Six pools — including one with waterfalls, a slide and a beach — 23 on-site restaurants and swan-shaped paddleboats make it tempting to hang at the resort as well. An extra bit of pixie dust: You can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points on the property.

TESTER NOTES: “The wait wasn’t long for water taxis or buses,” said our reviewer, who visited in August and highlighted how close it was to the Disney theme parks. She described her room at the Swan as “clean and comfortable”and enjoyed the quick-service coffee bars, ice cream at The Fountain and dinner at Il Mulino.

A 500-acre nature-filled oasis in the heart of the city, Grande Lakes Orlando provides the calm many families crave after a big day at the theme parks. Families can stay in the JW Marriott or The Ritz-Carlton — they’re connected by an indoor walkway — and access the amenities at both. Shuttles whisk families to/from Walt Disney World and Universal, which are about 20 minutes away. Regulars highly recommend flexing your theme park time so one morning you can take an eco-tour on the resort’s lake or go fishing. When you return to Grande Lakes at night, the comfiest beds await you. Book a family suite at the JW so kids can have bunks!

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer raved about the restaurants, noting that she didn’t need a reservation even in peak summer season. “Primo, an Italian restaurant, exceeded our expectations,” she said. “The food, service and ambiance was amazing. I could probably eat there every night.” While there is a huge amount to do in Orlando, our tester said, “With all the activities and places to dine, I could have stayed on property the whole time.”

A newly renovated all-suite hotel less than two miles from Walt Disney World gives families a lot of space for their money. At certain times of year, nightly rates for the 500-square-foot suites at the Caribe Royale Orlando Resort can drop as low as $200, including taxes and the hotel fee that covers transportation to Walt Disney World. Tastefully decorated suites each include a microwave, a mini fridge and a flat-screen TV. If you’d prefer a full kitchen or are a family of six, opt for a two-bedroom villa. It’s an outstanding value, especially if you consider the money you’ll save by making some of your own meals. When kids aren’t in the parks, a pool with a 75-foot waterslide and a splash pad will entertain your crew.

TESTER NOTES: “Our suite was spectacular,” said our reviewer. “It had king bed in the bedroom and a pullout sofa in the living room that both my kids slept on comfortably.” She also loved the location, noting, “It’s close to the airport and Walt Disney World. Plus, we were able to get to Target within a few minutes.”

Sure, all travel is educational, but on a trip to the adventure park Discovery Cove, your kids will soak up facts about marine life and come away with an even bigger desire to protect it. Accredited by the Association of Zoo & Aquariums, the attraction is best for kids age 8 and up, who are old enough to take part in most of the activities that, along with food and drinks, are included in the admission price. The Dolphin Swim is the big crowd-pleaser: After you change into a provided wetsuit, animal care specialists fill in your crew on how dolphins communicate, what their behaviors mean and what they like to eat. Then comes a one-on-one encounter with a dolphin that kids will likely talk about for months.

TESTER NOTES: Discovery Cove offers several limited-space activities for an extra charge. Our reviewer’s family raved about the Flamingo Mingle, in which they got up close and personal with the birds. “It was a fun experience for all of us,” she said. Her husband and 10-year-old son also tried SeaVenture, an underwater walking tour for which guests wear a dive helmet. She said, “It was a small group, which allowed for everyone to interact with ocean life comfortably.”

Midway between Breckenridge and Copper Mountain lies Frisco, a tiny mountain resort town that's known as the "Main Street of the Rockies." Dotted with 50+ mom-and-pop shops and restaurants —many of which sell locally made items — Frisco's Main Street has a laid-back, authentic vibe that all ages would enjoy. The nearby marina includes a small beach that satisfies young kids. But the truth is, families with adventure-seeking older tweens or teens get the most out of a trip to Frisco because of its incredible hiking, mountain biking and kayaking opportunities. Besides a vacation rental, your crew could stay at the Frisco Lodge or Frisco Inn on Galena — both in the heart of town.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, a home-improvement expert, appreciated seeing solar panels on many of the buildings in town almost as much as the two moose he spotted. "Frisco seemed to place a high value on sustainability," he said. "There were plenty of EV charging stations available." But he noted that he didn't use his car much after the initial 90-minute drive from the Denver airport. He said, "Many of the activities and restaurants are accessible by foot."

A mountain town in central Wyoming, Casper delivers an authentic Western experience minus the crowds of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park. Your crew can hike, kayak and fly-fish surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes, and several attractions help kids understand how the Wild West evolved. At the free National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, families can explore hands-on exhibits, including a kids' corner and Pony Express cabin, that capture what pioneers experienced in the mid-1800s. For dino fans in particular, the Tate Geological Museum wows with its skeleton of a T. Rex found in Wyoming. While there are a variety of chain hotels in town, vacation rentals are a great option if you plan to stay more than a few days.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer visited during the annual College National Finals Rodeo in June. "The atmosphere was fun, and there were local artisans selling a variety of wares," she said. She also recommends the Dutch Oven Wagon Trail Trek, where families pile into a covered wagon for a 90-minute journey through historic trails that ends with a cookout on the banks of the Platte River.

About four hours west of Denver, Grand Junction is a dream come true for families who love both great food and adventure. On some 1 million acres of public lands, hiking and biking trails and ATV tours abound — and there are plenty of outfitters with the equipment that kids need. You could even day-trip to Moab, which is about 90 minutes away. After you return from the fun activities, Grand Junction's charming downtown welcomes you with tasty, affordable eats at family-friendly establishments, like Tacoparty, Pablo's Pizza and Trail Life Brewing.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer's family of five split their stay between Camp Eddy — a property that has vintage Airstreams and tiny homes — and Hotel Maverick, which offers family rooms with king-size bunk beds. "Camp Eddy has a great location on the Colorado River and is convenient to downtown. We loved the live music and food trucks they had one night," said our reviewer. "On the campus of Colorado Mesa University, Hotel Maverick has a youthful energy plus the incredible Devil's Kitchen rooftop restaurant with views of Colorado National Monument."

The perfect time to visit Greater Palm Springs conveniently lines up with kids' spring breaks. The region comprised of nine desert locales typically receives very little, if any, rain during March and April, and high temps reach the 80s. It's home to stunning, pool-filled resorts, cultural attractions, outdoor adventures and, of course, fantastic shopping. One must-do with kids of all ages: Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up 8,000 feet to Mt. Jacinto State Park, which has stunning views and a kid-friendly Long Valley Discovery Trail hike.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who visited in September, called the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens "the best zoo I've ever been to" and noted that it was "wide open and serene." She stayed at La Quinta Resort & Club, which has sprinkled 41 (that's not a typo) pools around the property. In addition to the main pool overlooking the San Rosa Mountains, each casita has a smaller pool nearby so your crew will never have to walk far to take a dip. "A kids' club operates in peak season, and year-round, kids can participate in a scavenger hunt to earn a prize," said our reviewer.

Nowhere in the "Show-Me" state can a family see and do more together than Branson. One day, your crew can bike some of the hundreds of miles of scenic trails in the Ozark Mountains and the next, your rides can take the form of coasters at the epic Silver Dollar City theme park. Live shows and entertainment, including the popular Dolly Parton's Stampede, give families fun options at night. Shedding its reputation as a destination for older adults, the average age of a visitor to Branson has dropped nine years since 2015 and 60% of visitors are families with kids.

TESTER NOTES: "Nature, history, roller coasters, arcades, theater, music, horses, you name it and Branson has some version of it," said our reviewer, who visited in August with her sister and three kids ranging in age from 6 to 14. Her family's highlights included Snowflex Tubing in the Ozarks ("All of the fun of snow tubing without the bulky clothes or freezing cold weather") and Silver Dollar City ("Besides great rides, artisans dressed in themed clothing and roamed the park").
